9/11 : Our William Barthman Story /

Our History 我们的历史  |  The Clock in The SideWalk  人行道上的大钟 |

William Barthman’s time-honored store in the Financial District, located at 174 Broadway, was the location from which customers and employees witnessed the tragic events of 9/11 unfold.  The collapse of the Twin Towers shattered two of William Barthman’s store windows as well as our door, and we are very fortunate that everyone successfully evacuated the premises safely.

During the following three days, William Barthman’s store was ransacked and looted; nevertheless, our safe was spared, and employees made every effort to go above and beyond for customers whose merchandise had been preserved.  At that time, our store received a plethora of encouraging notes and patriotic artwork, for which we are truly appreciative.  William Barthman’s store underwent a complete restoration throughout the next ten weeks and proudly reopened on November 26, 2001.  During the holiday season of 2001, the store was greeted with an outpouring of support from loyal customers hoping to revitalize Downtown businesses.

In respect of the eleventh anniversary of September 11, William Barthman would like to remember and honor the victims of the terrorist attacks, many of whom were our esteemed customers.  We proudly support the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum and admire the organization’s focus on resilience and healing; William Barthman’s Manhattan and Brooklyn stores are participants in the Signs of Support program, and our first-hand account of the events on September 11 is featured in “Make History”, a collection of narratives and photographs on the National 9/11 Museum’s website.
